Drivers on the Superhighway Facebook Bypass the Town of Blogville

Traffic through Blogville has been increasingly light over the past year. I noticed this first in the lack of comments I was getting. At first I chalked it up to the time of year or day of the week. Then I noticed it was more pervasive than that. It was without a pattern, but was also getting worse.

I have to admit I am among those non-commenters in Blogville. It is simple - I have little time to spend reading and commenting on posts. What time I have I use to catch up with my FURiends. I am sure many of you wonder where I am. Well, I am reading your blogs (kinda, more on that later) and enjoying your presence, but I am simply unable to comment a lot.

I try to spent a day a month commenting on posts - just so my FURiends know I still love them. Because I do - each and every one of you.

Red-faced, I also admit that sometimes I just skim the headlines - or the Google Reader synopsis. It is all I have time for, really. These forays never show up on your stats because I never really engage. Sorry. So if you think no one is reading your blog, maybe consider the headline skimmers. We are all doing it, I bet. And you have no way to tell.

Then I added a Facebook account for Noodles the Pug. Guess what. I found my readers were hanging out there on that superhighway we call Fb. Why not? News comes fast, comments are short - and then we are on to something else. We have camaraderie and support without putting in a lot of time.

Is Facebook surpassing Blogville? I hate to think this is true since, as a writer, I prefer the longer format of a blog. I also like the closeness of our little community when compared to the vast BIG CITY of Fb. But it is what it is, and I am afraid it may be the bypass that eventually chokes off Blogville from Internet traffic.Along the way, I found out some very interesting information. Maybe a third of my readers are entering via Facebook! They are commenting and "Like"-ing on Facebook. And unless you manually tally up those Fb likes and comments, you won't have a accurate picture of blog traffic.

What is my point here? Well, I guess I am telling myself and perhaps you, my readers, to not give up. Blogville is alive and well AND growing. Check out your stats to see that there is traffic to your site. If not, maybe it is time to reinvent ourselves. I, for one, have no intention of letting the readership highway pass me by.

Hi Noodles!
Mama Mindy here. I tried the facebook thing and it just doesn't work for me...it feels ultra impersonal and people always want you to like them and them to like you...and sometimes you don't want to like people but in this day and age...it is "hurtful" if you don't like them. The blog is my way of sharing my love of the pugs and the purrs without having those who don't share my love of pugs and purrs out of my hair. :) Also, I seemed to have spent more time on facebook and it was "wasted" time...idle chatter that really didn't matter...and then blogville helps eachother...
I'm glad you are able to do what you can do Noodles, but I think I will stay off the highway and enjoy the scenery of blogville. :)
Much Love,
Mama Mindy

The Slimmer Puggums say "Hi!" too. :)

Hi Noodles:
Well I have a facebook page and have had it for quiet awhile BUT it is nothing like blogville. I agree with momma minday and I like here much better. It feels like home.

Mama Mindy - I actually agree with you 100%. I even "yelled" at some of my Fb FURiends who used to be my Blogville FURiends about abandoning Blogville. But I think they will be back someday. We will see. In the meantime, I enjoy both worlds as I have an innate need to express my opinions to a large audience.
Love Noodles

Great Post Noodles. We have been sad that quite of few of the bloggers we originally followed and actually got us wanting to blog, no longer are here. We do not do facebook for pretty much the same reason that Mama Mindy stated, too impersonal.
We do find it hard to keep up with visiting and commenting sometimes, I think all of us do and are understanding about that, but blogville is where we would rather be. Thanks for hanging in there with us!

Hm, we have been noticing a bit of slow down in Blogville too Noodles...so do not fret, it isn't just in your part of town! Hm, I hope that Fb and Twitter don't leave all us longer writers hanging! I like to post a link or a photo in those places, but I never hang out too long! :-D

I think that everything has highs and lows, and it doesn't necessarily mean something is gone for good. I think blogging still has its place. And I'm not saying that JUST because Momma refuses to allow me to have my own FB account.

Honestly, it is just too hard to keep up and when the reader disappeared it messed up our blog list. We try our best to comment. Wordless Wednesday is our favorite day. We try to comment especially we join the WW hop. There's other media to be engage to your friends too like twitter, FB n G+ (which we can't figure it out). Lots of Golden Woofs, Sugar

Never fear Noodles. We also read all our blogville friends posts but don't always comment on them either. Something about the typist needing time to do other things. We love reading your posts and seeing what you have been doing.

We were introduced to Blogville about 4 years ago but it still took us a couple of years to start our own blog.

I was just thinking the other day how sad it is that the blogs we used to read and enjoy haven't been updated in months OR longer ...

I don't blog too much but never have. I try for once a week but sometimes life gets in the way. And work blocked me from viewing the blogs so I try to get on a couple of times a week or so!

Hang in there Noodles! We love you! And hopefully everyone will come back ...

Blogville is my home and this is where I'm staying until my paws can no longer type or my Mum gets cut off by the internet company! Must say that I am very Anti-Facebook, I do not have a Facebook page, neither does my Mum or Dad, my feeling is that it is so impersonal and Blogville by name is a huge and loving community, I may not have time some days to comment but I do read your posts and try to comment as much as possible and when I do I like to fully engage and give my opinion, I would never simply just "like" something, I love it with all my heart just like in Blogville we love our Furiends! Facebook can cause trouble, people just look at it to know your business, I like to stay friends with those I have been listening to for years now and to see the people in my 'real' life!
I love you my Noo-Noo stay where the love is, in Blogville! Love your puggy buddy Frank XxxxX

I finally gave up. It was too disheartening. Spending time thinking up posts only to have them sit there. So I said goodbye and only three people commented.

I feel pretty low.
