The Final Chapter - Nature's Variety Instinct Raw Boost

My NEW BFF (Best Food Forever)

When Chewy.com approached me to try a new food over the course of a month and report my findings in two posts, I said SURE. After all, I had some experience with the brand based on samples from Bark in the Park 2014 (The company was one of the sponsors for the event).

But I hadn't tried the newest formulation, Raw Boost, nor had I done any serious testing of the food I received in samples. I had mostly used them for travel food or emergency food. And face it, I will eat almost anything labeled, however loosely, F-O-O-D.

So I repeat, I said SURE, I'm game - and Ms. Sydney promptly sent the food my way. I was expecting small sample bags . . . or at best a small bag of food to try. What I got was MORE THAN ENOUGH food to eat for a month for both Molly and Me. I was Ecstatic, to say the least. Exuberant to say a little more. Exultant to be precise!

We dutifully ate said food every day - 1/3 of a cup (2.66667 oz or 83.3 grams) TWICE a day. Mommy wanted to use my regular portions to test if it made me fatter or not. I was happy because I did NOT want to be limited to a teensy tiny portion. Usually Mommy added veggies and fruits to the meal - but nothing different than we usually eat with meals. She did not want to skew the results by introducing a few new things.

So that is how NV Instinct Raw Boost lamb and salmon came into our lives. It looked amazing. It smelled heavenly. It tasted delectably out of this WORLD. Even Molly, who is notorious for turning her little black nose up at even the most expensive food, loved it. Small crunchy kibble flavored by lamb meat. . . all meat. . . and salmon. . . all salmon. What a combination! And mixed into that delicious kibble were melt-in-your-mouth chunks of freeze dried meat (could be either lamb or salmon or both. . . Mommy can't tell). Over the MOON flavor.

You may have noticed a couple of posts this month about this food espousing some of it's benefits as we saw them.

Even though Ms. Sydney only wanted before and after posts, we were just so excited about what was happening while eating this food that we HAD to WRITE the few more posts detailing those discoveries. Otherwise our final post would go on for DAYS and our readers would RIOT in the STREETS of BLOGVILLE because the post would be THAT long. I think you get the picture.

So in summation, what I want to say about Instinct Raw Boost is IT WORKS for ME in so many ways that it is going to be our GO-TO food from now on. It is pricey - a little out of our budget if truth be told - but we told Mommy we'd be willing to go without vacations and more clothes and more toys IF WE COULD eat this food all the time.

**OPINIONS ARE mine, Molly's Mommy #1's and #2's, and Sunshine the Cat's. We were not paid to FAWN over this product. Nor were we paid to say nice things about Ms. Sydney who totally deserves the nice words. NOPE!!! We are just as broke now as we were before we got this job. We did receive the bag of Nature's Variety Instinct Raw Boost lamb and salmon free of charge in order to allow us to test it. But believe you me, it was totally worth all of the time and sacrifices it took to thoroughly test this product.

Molly's Spa Day

Molly is a high maintenance dog. She has that long furry stuff that catches on everything if she gets too shaggy. She doesn't shed much at all - but she does get really shaggy and sloppy looking. Like many fancy pups, her fur is definitely something that defines her.

She was getting a little grimy and unkempt when Mommy suggested a SPA DAY. Molly thought about it and thought about it.

Molly said "Sure" and so they planned it. Little did Molly know she was in for a treat. We had just received a NEW BRUSH from Chewy.com called the Furminator Dual Dog Grooming Brush. It is supposed to take care of all of the problems with long fur like Molly has - Tangles, Snarls, Mats, and so on. Me with my perfect SHORT fur - not so much. I do not have these problems. But I shed a lot and the Furminator DUAL DOG GROOMING Brush is supposed to help with that as well. Only we are talking about MOLLY'S SPA DAY and not mine, ahem.

So Mommy unwrapped the Brush. It is kinda cool looking, if you ask me and has two sides to it. Once side, the PIN BRUSH is for long coats as it works best on tangles and matted furs. This is the one for Molly. The other side is more for sleeking and shining up the coat so it is usable on all shapes and sizes of coats. And notice the triangular shape. This shape allows the brush to follow the natural contours of a dog's head and body. We aren't SQUARE, after all.
First, Mommy gave Molly a BATH. She needed it. Like I said, her long fur is a magnet for stuff like weeds (thank you Spring) and dust BUNNIES.

Then she SPRANG into action with the FURMINATOR DUAL DOG GROOMING BRUSH using the PIN BRUSH side and easing out tangles and making Molly's hair look all long and straight. Then Molly laid down to relax a while and let her coat dry. As she did this, all of her natural curls SPRANG to life. But she was not done yet!!!! Al little ear cleaning and some eye fur decoloring was needed next.

Here is where the Furminator Brush really sold itself to us. Mommy brushed and shined up Molly's coat with the bristle side of the brush. Then she smoothed and styled Molly's fur just so. At the end of this session we had a "NEW" Molly. Mommy gives the FURMINATOR DUAL DOG GROOMING BRUSH a FOUR PAWS up for ease of use and overall quality. The handle of the brush fits comfortably in her hand and the pin brush side made tangles almost melt away. She also likes the fact that it comes with a cover to keep the bristles from getting flat when shoved into out grooming basket AND for keeping said bristles clean.

Furminator is an American company that was founded in St. Louis. The original product, The FURminator, was designed to eliminate up to 90% of pet shedding by trimming the loose undercoat. Since the success of the original grooming tool, Furminator has branched out into other grooming tools and hygiene products for pets. In addition to their large and growing product lines, Furminator is active in pet rescue, especially in the St. Louis area where the company was founded. Check out their website for current activities and inspiring stories. http://www.furminator.com

*We are not paid to say anything good or bad about this company or this product. Chewy.com provides us with the product free of charge to test it and then write about out results.

Pug Purse

Mommy #2 went to Japantown yesterday for the annual Nikkei Matsuri, cherry blossom festival. She tries to go every year with Auntie B - it is their special excursion. This year she said I was going as well and I wanted to very very much. My favorite BOUTIQUE is down there in Japantown - Biscuits, Give a Dog a Bone. I love that place and I love the owner, Miss Jennifer, a lot too.

Also at Nikkei Matsuri is my FAVORITE musical group - San Jose Taiko. I love the taiko so much that I DREAM of seeing them performing. They really create so many different sounds and emotions through their drums. Check out there website for some soundbytes and some background in this decidedly Japanese music form.

I waited and waited ALL MORNING LONG while Mommy got ready to go. Then I stepped outside into the yard to do some bidness and when I came back in - she was gone. She had completely forgotten that she was going to take me along this year. A lot of people bring their dogs to Nikkei Matsuri, so I might have made a new FURiend or two. But she was GONE, I tell you. Without me.

She was checking out her favorite booth,TRIMITIVE, when she came across this -

See!!! Right there on the bottom.. ... ... .. in the RED HAT! That was what Mommy saw that jogged her pea brain. She had forgotten me. She felt so bad (but, I note, not bad enough to go into Biscuits and get me a treat) about forgetting me. Even more when she noticed all of the other people who HAD brought their beloved pets. But not me. I was sitting at home. . . waiting.

The Food Does WHAT?

I have always had pretty good FUR. It is three coats of beautiful FAWN coloring highlighted with some black down my spine. I like my fur. As a rule, it is nice to the touch and lovely to look at.

Then I tried Nature's Variety Instinct Raw Boost lamb and salmon flavor. You would NOT believe it. My FUR is BETTER than EVER!!! Seriously!

Before we tried the food

It is now

  • Shinier than ever before
  • Softer than ever before
  • Fuller than ever before
  • Has PEOPLE saying OOOH and AHHHH a lot when they see me
Seriously - all from the quality ingredients in the Food! Check out what this food contains - and NOTICE the EMPHASIS on FOOD . . .

71% Pure animal ingredients and nutritious oils
29% Vegetables, fruits, and other wholesome ingredients
0% Grain or gluten

What about THAT!!! Oh. You want Specifics - well, I have that TOO:

Lamb, Salmon Meal, White Fish Meal (Pacific Whiting, Pacific Sole, Pacific Rockfish), Canola Oil (preserved with Mixed Tocopherols and Citric Acid), Tapioca, Lamb Meal, Peas, Menhaden Fish Meal, Tomato Pomace, Freeze Dried Lamb, Suncured Alfalfa Meal, Chickpeas, Montmorillonite Clay, Natural Flavor, Potassium Chloride, Carrots, Salt, Apples, Freeze Dried Lamb Liver, Freeze Dried Lamb Kidney, Pumpkinseeds, Cranberries, Vitamins (Vitamin A Supplement, Vitamin D3 Supplement, Vitamin E Supplement, Niacin Supplement, L-Ascorbyl-2-Polyphosphate, d-Calcium Pantothenate, Thiamine Mononitrate, Pyridoxine Hydrochloride, Riboflavin Supplement, Folic Acid, Biotin, Vitamin B12 Supplement), Choline Chloride, Butternut Squash, Minerals (Zinc Proteinate, Iron Proteinate, Copper Proteinate, Manganese Proteinate, Ethylenediamine Dihydriodide, Sodium Selenite), Ground Flaxseed, Dried Kelp, Broccoli, Dried Bacillus coagulans Fermentation Product, Rosemary Extract, Apple Cider Vinegar, Salmon Oil, Dried Chicory Root, Blueberries

BOOM!!!! Them is some serious EATABLES!!!!

What does it all mean? The high protein foods build strong bones and teeth. They give us energy and keep us healthy. Dogs NEED high protein diets to thrive. The Omega 3 and Omega 6 fatty acids sound like they might be bad BUT THEY AREN'T! These are the ingredients that are making my fur so luxurious and my skin so supple. They do all kinds of other good things like keep my digestive track in line. Toss in some probiotics, fiber and enzymes and you have a tasty ALL BODY power machine.

But back to my COAT of FUR. . . According the Cesar Millan, a dog's OR PUG'S fur can tell you a lot about the health and well being of the dog. A dull and dry coat might mean not enough GOOD nutrition. And since Instinct is high protein and fur is largely made of protein, well, it is a win win for me.

So let me sum up. . .  Nature's Variety Instinct Raw Boost formula dog food is high in PROTEIN, high in OMEGA 3 and OMEGA 6 fatty acids, and DEVOID of un-needed grains and glutens. It tastes like HEAVEN in a BOWL with the freeze-dried meat bits (Mommy calls it candy because we beg for it) and rich tasting crunchy kibble. It makes me energtic, makes me feel full (for a PUG), and makes my skin feel good. Picky-eater Molly actually eats Instinct Raw Boost without additives and without hours of begging and pleading by Mommy for her to e-a-t. AND it makes my FUR softer than SILK and Molly's hair-stuff feel like a soft CLOUD. We look GOOD and we feel GOOD.

My one complaint. . . . I can't keep the CAT away from my dish.

I think she is PLOTTING to steal my Instinct

*All of the opinions and observations expressed in this post are mine, Molly's and Mommy's ONLY. No one fed (haha) us information or gave us the answers. We worked HARD by continually eating this food (Nature's Variety Instinct Raw Boost) for a zillion days (1 month) to evaluate its affect on us and our health. In return for our very honest and candid review, we received a bag of NVIRB to use in our TRIAL.

Claire, Jamie and . . . . . . HAMMISH?

My Mommy #2 is a little obsessed with Claire and Jamie. Oh, they are not real people. They are characters in the Outlander series of books by Diana Gabaldon - NOW a television series on STARZ.
She often thinks about how them. She frequently chats with my Aunties about the show or the books (which she read TWICE). It is always Jamie, this. . . and Claire, that.

Claire and Jamie

Her love of all things Scottish (like that segue? Sneaky, huh?) began a long long time ago when she visited Scotland for the first time. It wasn't the haggis or the whisky that captured her interest. Neither was it the men in Edinburgh wearing kilts (which she decided were DEFINITELY masculine and handsome) nor the woolly cows scattered around the green hills. NO. . . it was the HEATHER scattered over the mountains and the welcoming town of Inverness. She went there for a 1 night visit and stayed for 4. It was cold and rainy most of the time - and yet she had seldom seen a lovelier place than that.

So she came home toting several sweaters (jumpers), jams and tartan scarves from Scotland. She studied the language (casually and cannot recall a thing), researched the clans, and generally decided it was a bonny place indeed. Our house still bears the scattered remains of her souvenirs of Scotland.

During an episode of "Outlander" two weeks ago, she sprang a surprise on me. We were going to have a tartan-clad visitor arriving in a couple of days. Who was it going to be? I asked? Claire? Jamie?

I waited patiently by the door on the day the visitor was due to arrive. I sat a long long time.

Who are YOU?

At last he arrived. In a package. I was PERPLEXED.

Who are you? I asked. What CLAN are you from? I honestly have never seen a tartan in that shade of lavender.

Meet Hammish

I am HAMMISH from Clan Pugnotes. And I am here to stay with you forever and be your B.F.F.
So we played and played in our yard. We played until the sun went down and we were called in for dinner.

Afterward, I settled next to Mommy to watch a bit of TELLY (television). I looked all around for HAMMISH and could not find him. I was on the verge of tears when I checked the bedroom. This is what I found.

I guess I wore him out.

This is the START of a GREAT FURiendship.

Stella Rose Long KNOWS Me So Well

So we finally got our new coats from Auntie S (Style on Four Paws boutique). I must say we are loving them even though we could NOT WEAR them all last weeks with temps jumping to 80 degrees Fahrenheit! OMP, absolutely NOT fleece wearin' weather. But this week may be another story as we are dropping to more Springlike temps with possible showers.

Stella Rose Long (Three Little Pugs) guessed my design absolutely CORRECTLY:
M-I-C-K-E-Y M-O-U-S-E

Molly got a different Disney design - the turtles from "Finding Nemo".

These coats feature:
  • Velcro fastening belly belt
  • Two rows of crochet IN YOUR CHOICE OF COLOR OR COLORS
  • Slot for collar
  • Sized to fit YOUR size

Aren't they the best? If you are interested in getting one for yourself, look to the right for Auntie S's ad.
You can email her at skehlers@gmail.com.

'Cause That's How Stubby Would Have Done It

EDITOR'S NOTE: This was originally scheduled for next week, Wednesday April 22, which is the actual EARTH DAY. But since so many cities and towns around NorCal are having EARTH DAY activities over this weekend, I thought I would print it NOW. SO enjoy. . . 5 days early.

Tomorrow, April 22, 2015 is EARTH DAY 2015; and I always like to spend time thinking of my FURiend, Angel Stubby, on EARTH DAY. Why on this day in particular? Well, simply put, Stubby was all about caring for our beloved PLANET and preserving her treasures. He spoke often about the importance of recycling and repurposing.

His blog is still accessible here in Blogville even though he is now residing over the Rainbow Bridge. Check it out at http://lifeofstubby.blogspot.com. He was a wonderful citizen of this Earth and I miss him and his smile A LOT.

So I got to thinking "What would Stubby like to talk about?" and I really couldn't STOP thinking of things. I had a lot of trouble limiting the theme to just a COUPLE of things. So I asked his Mama what she thought Stubby would like to talk about - and she said

W-A-T-E-R

Well, I hadn't even given THAT a thought since usually we focus on things like TRASH and AIR QUALITY on Earth Day. But here in CALIFORNIA we are in our FOURTH year of drought and perhaps we SHOULD be focusing on WATER and how to preserve it. Water - is life. Without it we would all perish and our beautiful BLUE DOT floating in Space would become a brown wasteland.

Here's a link to this wonderful website I have discovered: 100+ Ways To Conserve Water

It is the little things we do that can have a big impact on how much water we have NOW and into the FUTURE.

  • Low Flow Toilets (those are like litter boxes for humans)
  • Low Flow Showerheads
  • Gray water (from laundry) diversion systems
  • Rain Barrels to catch the FEW PRECIOUS drops that fall
  • Buckets next to the bath tub to carry used water to the garden

I do realize that you in the EAST and MIDWEST might be having a hard time focusing on lack of water and really you kinda have the opposite problem. That DOES NOT mean you do not have to be mindful of the water you use. While it is important to not WASTE water in case of bad times, it is also important to PRESERVE the QUALITY of that water.

We all need to be vigilant against WATER POLLUTERS.

  • Chemicals we put in the soil end up in the water
  • Air pollution affects the cleanliness of water as well
  • Use soaps and cleaning products that are biodegradable so they don't linger in the water affecting the ecosystem
  • Don't throw trash into storm drains or water ways. That trash can affect the quality of the water
  • Check out the companies you buy products from - do they monitor how much their manufacturing affects local water?

Here is a link to some fun (and scary) facts about THE EARTH'S WATER.

As I was DICTATING this post to my ASSISTANT, I felt as if Stubby was by my side guiding me along, sending me in the right direction, and whispering little tidbits of information in my ear.It was as if we are writing this together and KNOW WHAT? It felt good.

So this EARTH DAY - Think of Stubby and what he would do to conserve and preserve our water supply. I bet you will come up with many more ways you can make a difference.

Do your part to Preserve Our Earth

A FORMER Pudgy Pug

Look how much I outweighed Molly!

This picture was taken last year when the VET declared me VERY FAT and told my Mommy that I needed to lose A LOT of weight. While Mommy disagreed with the VET calling me VERY FAT, she agreed that I needed to lose some weight and that at the time I was on a D-I-E-T. I did NOT consider my self at all FAT. . . maybe a little PUDGY as in Princess Pudgy but not FAT.

I had gone to the vet because I was displaying signs of tummy upset and possible pancreatic disorder. Luckily my pancreas was fine and the VET put me on bland food and antacid for a month. He said after that I really needed to lose 3-5 pounds.

So Mommy tried everything to get my weight down - diet food (she did not like the ingredients and they did not work anyhow), exercise (I had trouble with wheezing a lot), and finally good food but SMALLER portions. She checked with the breeder she adopted me from and was told that was at the absolute minimum amount of food I should eat, any less would be unhealthy. But I was so hungry after eating that I would fight with Molly. Mommy started building salads for me to have with my dinner and that helped a lot.

We are closer in weight now. This is a picture of the TURDUCKEN
we tested in January

Slowly the weight came off and by last Christmas I was almost 4 pounds lighter and looked a lot healthier. But Mommy worried because, frankly, I was starting to lose too much weight so she pondered returning to pre-D-I-E-T portions. But would I gain back all the weight I gained (she always tries to feed me good foods)? The last time she tried this I sure did- and I was eating HALO and such. I looked like a BREAD BOX in no time flat. So what to do? Well, Ms. Sydney at Chewy.com came to our RESCUE without even knowing it. She asked if we would review this new food from Nature's Variety Instinct - RAW BOOST. Of course we said YES!!!

Yes. I have used this picture a number of times

It's been 2 weeks now (15 days to be exact) and Mommy has been feeding me a normal amount of food so I am less STARVING after finishing my meal. That food is so yummy even SUNSHINE the CAT begs for it. ANY WHOOOO, what has Mommy found out? I am MAINTAINING my waistline without having to eat smaller portions! And the food is satisfying (although I still beg whenever anyone enters the kitchen - just habit, really) so that I don't look around the house for any stored treats AFTER I have just eaten! And the constant BELCHING and FARTING I was doing with the last food she tried on me. . . well that is gone as well. Now I occasionally Belch and Fart just not all the time. I AM A PUG, after all!

Look at this trim waistline . . . well, it would look trimmer if I
wasn't trying to sit. . . trust me on this

My point is - good food = good nutrition = healthier pug.

I Will Not Seek. . . I Will Not Run. . .

Dinner should be an adventure. ADVENTURE IN TASTE, that is. Once in a while my Mommys like to change it up and make a GAME of it. For my MIND, they say. KEEPS me young, they aver. AGGRAVATES ME, I contest.

The other day my food was NOT in its usual place - the place I ALWAYS expect it to be. The place I patiently sit at waiting for instructions to eat. PATIENTLY wait, I might add. Then OUT of the blue, Mommy says I need to FIND my food first.

I sat there. I looked at her with tears in my lovely eyes.

I sat there in disbelief, looking longingly at the empty SPOT where my dish should be.

I sat there . . . waiting. . . waiting. . . waiting.

Then I started to whine - a little. Then a little more.

Finally Mommy got the hint - I was NOT going to hunt for my food. I COULD NOT hunt for my food.

Hehheh. . .

Who needs to strengthen HER mind?

Noodles's Goes to the Pre-PROM

Getting some lovin'

I, NOODLES the Pug, am a very lucky PUG because I am loved and adored by so many. That is not bragging. It just happens to be the truth and I am sincerely humbled by all of the accolades. It just so happened that some TIME ago I was asked to HELP out some of Mommy #1's friends - they wanted ME to STAR in their PROM pictures. This was new to me and Mommy. As far as WE knew, the COUPLE always starred in the PROM pictures. But WE said SURE nonetheless, and we went about looking for PROM dresses suitable for a PUG.

They were all so gorgeous that I simply could not choose.

Then Mommy found out I did not need a DRESS after all because the PROM-GOERS wanted me AU NATURAL. Suits me fine. I love bring AU NATURAL as much as possible.

So on the DAY OF THE PROM, we hopped into this big VAN and drove to a couple of parks where apparently a lot of PROM-goers take pictures BECAUSE there were a LOT of them everywhere. They were all posing and primping and EVERYBODY looked so glamorous! But NONE of them BUT Mommy's friends had YOURS TRULY to pose with them.

Here are a couple of photos from the SHOOT. Can you pick ME out from this line-up of GORGEOUS FEMALES? I know it is hard because we are all ASIAN, too.

It was a lot of fun to be included in the PROM celebration as you all KNOW it is such a special part of HIGH SCHOOL. I am pretty sure that NEXT YEAR, when Mommy #1 is a SENIOR, I will again be invited to pose. Maybe THIS time I will get to wear a BALL GOWN too.

Me, part of the PROM court?

Molly Joins a New Club

Mommy, my face hurts from smiling so much

I think you all remember when we got this HUGE package from Chewy.com and it turned out to be this GIGANTIC bag of FOOD. Well I can tell you, there was so much excitement at Casa de Noodles that it cannot be accurately measured on an EXCITEMENT meter. Seriously! Just look at Molly's tail! She is wagging it so fast that her tail is actually just a white blur in the right side of the photo.
And me. . . well I COULD NOT wipe that GRIN off of my face for anything. And I mean - for ANYTHING!

Look at those SMILES!

The idea of this project was for us to try the food for a MONTH and report back to Ms. Sydney from Chewy.com. We needed to tell her our THOUGHTS about the food. . . How we LIKED the food. . . and so on. I knew I could handle this project just fine. Molly, on the other hand, for all her tail WAGGING excitement is a picky picky picky eater and has been from DAY ONE. And our Mommys never know when she will reject a food - sometimes it is right away and sometimes it is THREE DAYS down the road. All we know, is sooner or later Molly will stop eating her food and will just sit and stare at the Mommys until something else is put in her dish.
I USED to help by land-sharking to her uneaten food and totally chowing down before any HUMAN was aware of it. AND I GOT AWAY WITH IT for the longest time. . . until the pounds I was putting on gave me away. It was then that the FORMERLY NICE lady at the humane society told my Mommy to start taking Molly's dish away the minute she rejected the food. She'd then have to GO HUNGRY until dinner time. At dinner there would be no problem getting her to eat as she would be very hungry. So that is what happened - all the while I WAS BLAMED for causing "Sweet Molly" to go without breakfast.
I am off point here. EVEN THAT did not change MISS PICKY EATER from rejecting every food brand tried within days of introducing them. Eventually she ate but slowly, reluctantly, and bitterly. And me. . . I slimmed down to the svelte PUG you see today.

MEGA YUM! Even the cat wants to eat this!

April 1, 2015 we started our trial of Nature's Variety Instinct RAW BOOST lamb and Salmon blend. It sure looks good and smells divine. I realize this statement messes up the sentence structure by introducing a present tense with a past tense paragraph. I just want to emphasize that NOTHING IN THAT STATEMENT HAS CHANGED!

Now? How about NOW? Maybe NOW?

Here we were POISED ready to embark on this FOOD ADVENTURE. Mommy made us sit for AN HOUR (Mommy note: They sit for under 1 minute. . . 1 full minute if they break the sit. . . I am not torturing them. . .) before we were allowed to SLOWLY approach our bowls. EVERYPUGGY knew I would totally love this food as I have totally LOVED all foods since I was BORN. And true enough, I ate with total abandon. . . with total pleasure. . . with total GLUTTONY! O.M.P. I could not slow down my eating for anything and next thing I knew, I was DONE and licking the empty bowl for every last flavor molecule.

Molly's smug mug

I looked over at Molly's area thinking THIS would be a great OPPORTUNITY to land-shark any of that delicious product residing in her bowl. . . when I saw THIS FACE looking at me! She had FINISHED her bowl of food. She had eaten ALMOST as fast as me!

MOLLY HAD JOINED THE CLEAN PLATE CLUB
for the first time in her life!
