If I Stare At It Long Enough Will It . . . #chewyinfluencer

Jump!

Jump!

I am thinking "JUMP!"

I really believe that if I stare at this treat long enough and HARD enough then it will leap into my mouth.

This revelation begins my review of a yummy, yummy, yummy, yummy treat that we received from Chewy.com. It was part of the delicious choices for September, This particular treat is a member of the Halo Treat line called Healthsome Vegetarian Biscuits with Peanut 'n Pumpkin Grain-Free Dog Treats.

Let me tell you, these are some YUMMY treats. Yummy with a capital Y. (two of them, really) I know that if left to my own devices, I would eat the whole bag. They are so good that they would carry me through a snowstorm. They would carry me through being stranded on a desert island. THEY would get me through a nasty heartbreak where even ICE CREAM does not work.

Yeah, I'm eating it. . .

They are THAT good.

But Noodles, you ask? Aren't those treats basically JUNK FOOD for pets and have no place in the day to day diet of a healthy pug?

Well, doubting fan - I'll answer that with JUST THE FACTS, MA'AM -

  1.  They are filled with natural protein and fiber from fruits and vegetables
  2.  They are made of a low-fat vegetarian formula which satisfies even committed carnivores
  3.  They achieve their goodness  made without any corn, fillers, added sugars or molasses, artificial flavors or colors
  4.  They have parsley that freshens breath, sweet potatoes that have complex carbohydrates for energy and a crunchy texture that cleans teeth
I think you will agree that Halo Healthsome Vegetarian Biscuits with Peanut 'n Pumpkin Grain-Free Dog Treats are ANYTHING but junk food.

The ingredient list is very short for a commercial product, too and I find that very comforting. If I cannot pronounce it, chances are I won't want to eat it.

Check this out: Potato Flour, Ground Peanuts, Tapioca Flour, Ground Peas, Canola Oil, Pumpkin, Tomatoes, Apples, Sweet Potatoes, Cranberries, Carrots, Split Peas, Broccoli, Parsley, and Ascorbic Acid (a Preservative)

Doesn't each and every one of those ingredients make your mouth water? OH MY PUG!

Molly and I did not get these every day because , , , well, treats. . . But we went KOOKOO for COCOPUFFS when we did get them! Want me to do a trick? Yeah, I'll leap tall buildings for one of those Halo treats. Want me to answer the phone and take dictation? I'll even do THAT for one of those Halo treats.

Ignore the bag on the left - that was for Sunshine. She
reviewed it a couple of posts ago

Halo basically hit a HOMERUN with the treat department and we are so glad we had the opportunity to try them.

*We were provided with one bag of Halo treats by Chewy.com to try, analyze, and otherwise evaluate for the sole purpose of this post. All opinions expressed in this post belong to Noodles the Pug and Molly the Malti ONLY. We let no one put words in our mouths. . . not for food and not for money.

Happy 18th Birthday Mommy NUMERO UNO!!!

This is the cake Mommy #2 made for Mommy #1. Today is her 18th birthday and she is living at her college now. It is very different from birthdays past because we are not doing a family cake.

This is a SNICKERDOODLE COOKIE cake. It is really 3 nine inch cookies with icing on them. Doesn't it look yummy? I did not even get a taste of frosting.

I'm keeping this short because I am out the door to go give her some birthday love as only a PUG can do. I love her so much and I really really really hope she has the

Best
Day
Ever!!!

It's The Cat's Pajamas . . . . . . . #chewyinfluencer

Hi - Sunshine the Cat here with another Chewy.com review. This time is is something very very IMPORTANT to ME - cat food. Who cares about Kibble? Who cares about Bones? Gimme some MEAT, FISH, or POULTRY and I am happy dancing!

This month I chose Stella & Chewy's Chick Chick Chicken Dinner Freeze-Dried Cat Food. Quite simply I chose it because I absolutely went BONKERS when Noodles and Molly were trying and reviewing the PUP version. Since this food is made for CATS, I thought why not?

The good news is,  Stella & Chewy's Chick Chick Chicken Dinner Freeze-Dried Cat Food is made with the same ALL NATURAL and preservative free materials (read - meats, fish, fruit, and so on) that the dog version is made from. . .

  • Chicken (Ground with Bone),
  • Chicken Liver,
  • Chicken Gizzard,
  • Pumpkin Seed,
  • Hard to pronounce but naturally occurring Potassium Chloride, Sodium Phosphate Monobasic, Choline Chloride, Dried Pediococcus Acidilactici Fermentation Product, Dried Lactobacillus Acidophilus Fermentation Product, Dried Bifidobacterium Longum Fermentation Product, Dried Enterococcus Faecium Fermentation Product, Taurine, Tocopherols (Preservative), Zinc Proteinate, Zinc Sulfate, Iron Sulfate, Iron Proteinate, Vitamin E Supplement, Niacin, Copper Sulfate, Copper Proteinate, Manganese Sulfate, Sodium Selenite, Manganese Proteinate, Thiamine Mononitrate, Pyridoxine Hydrochloride, Vitamin D3 Supplement, Calcium Iodate, Vitamin B12 Supplement.
Look at the first FOUR ingredients! They make my mouth water. All of this is shaped into a ball/pellet and freeze-dried to lock in all the goodies. Then, Stella & Chewy's Chick Chick Chicken Dinner is served by re-hydrating the food in warm (more like hot) water. It can also be served as is but make sure there is a lot of water nearby as freeze-dried foods tend to make one thirsty.

So the first night the Human servant hastily made my dinner while I howled that it was TAKING TOO LONG. She happily served it to me KNOWING that I had lapped up MY portion of the dog patties when we tried them out. Hmmmm. I am not sure what it was but I certainly had no desire to eat whatever it was she plopped down in front of me. After a couple of hours I actually nibbled some but the human threw a lot of it away. She tried once more and when I acted the same way, she decided this was NOT going to work. Now I get the food served AS A TOPPER (5-7 of the balls) of Stella & Chewy's Chick Chick Chicken Dinner Freeze-Dried Cat Food as is, not rehydrated. And I love them. I love them almost or MAYBE as much as the Halo Liv-a-Littles in which we all know I want to BATHE.

Moral of the story - never assume a CAT will repeat a behavior or eat the same food TWICE.

It's a fact that I really like this food. It is yummy and good for me. I simply did not want to eat it hydrated.

Furthermore, this is GOOD FOR THE KITTY food as all Stella & Chewy "raw" foods are. They are high in protein which is all-important to a Cat's continued health. It's gluten and grain free because let's face it, neither of those are good for a kitty. Plus there is no added sugar or salt, there is added taurine which aids the eyes and heart. And pumpkin seeds help digestion. All around this is a fine addition to a cat's diet.

It can be pricey as all really really good foods can be. This is basically a raw diet and those are even pricier. But when you add in the VALUE of your pet's continued health due to eating such a quality diet, the cost just might balance out and fit your budget.

I, Sunshine the Cat, encourage you to try Stella and Chewy products as they are indeed THE CAT'S PAJAMAS!

Chewy.com carries a full line of Stella & Chewy products.

*I refuse to be paid for my opinions. They are mine and what is mine cannot be bought and sold. I accepted some food free of charge to try so that I could form an opinion and then tell you all about it. I do thank Chewy.com for affording me this opportunity.

#chewyinfluencer Finally the end of the Thirty Day Challenge and I Gotta Say

IT WAS A WILD SUCCESS!!!

We loved, loved, LOVED the Nutro Wild Frontier Rolling Meadows Recipe! I know, I know. You are thinking "But Noodles, you like EVERY food." And while that is certainly true, I do have DEGREES of liking-ness. Molly is picky, too, so she is a good meter for assessing foodable liking-ness.

Here's the thing - we BOTH loved this food. We BEGGED at dinner time - uh, more than usual, that is. We JUMPED when Mommy took too long to lay-that-food-down. We both GOBBLED every morsel down in record time then proceeded to lick our chops and our bowls for the next TEN MINUTES. Really!

If I was to theorize - and you KNOW I love to do so - I would say the main attraction of Nutro Wild Frontier Rolling Meadows Recipe is the FLAVOR. And that is flavor that can only really be achieved by using REAL and FRESH ingredients. One simply CANNOT imitate the rich, intense flavor of real food. To refresh your memories, here are the ingredients for this particular recipe:

  • Lamb
  • Chicken Meal
  • Chickpeas
  • Peas
  • Lamb Meal
  • Chicken Fat (Preserved with Mixed Tocopherols)
  • Dried Potatoes
  • Dehydrated Alfalfa Mea
  •  Potato Protein
  • Sunflower Oil (Preserved with Mixed Tocopherols)
  • Natural Flavor
  • Flaxseed
  • and naturally occurring vitamins, minerals, and preservatives

Nothing wrong with that list of GOODNESS. Flavor - for us pups, it is all  about the flavor.

Moms, however, have a different spin on things. My Mommy said she wanted to see how the food affected out coats, eyes, joints, poop, and so on. Overall, the report card is pretty good. It averages out to about an A-/B+ when everything is taken into consideration. She said some of the other foods we have tried this year actually did a better job in terms of overall health. Our coats are soft but not as shiny (neither of us have very shiny coats anyhow) as before. We have plenty of energy and do not seem at all sluggish which is very good for small low-energy pets. BUT - and this is a big BUTT for Mommy (there is a pun there) - our (my) fartiness and belchiness has increased dramatically. This is NOT a pleasant side effect for those around us (I don't notice anything bad). She thinks it is most likely due to the coincidence of APPLE SEASON arriving at the same time as the food. But she just is not sure so she wanted to put it OUT THERE. In any case, there are those two negative BUT that is all. There is also the issue of Pug Eye (also called eye snot) and Stink Butt (anal glands not expressing fully) which Mommy noticed ticked up a bit from the beginning of the month. It might again be coincidence and one month - one food makes it hard to determine the cause.

Would she recommend this food? Yes, she would to those in the market for High Quality at a lower price. But is is not equal in quality to the higher priced foods, she cautions. Our health is not suffering at all - in fact we are doing pretty good and eating food for which we jump for joy when she opens the bag.

We, the PUG and the MALTI, think a little more highly of Nutro Wild Frontier Rolling Meadow Recipe and we give it

We want to thank Chewy.com for giving us this opportunity to TRY and REVIEW Nutro Wild Frontier. Of course, you know, we are never paid to write these reviews and we never never let anyone or any company put words in our mouths. All opinions and observations belong to US - Noodles and Molly.

We Went to a Wedding for Cousin K in New Mexico

I'm all BRIDED up for the wedding

The mountains and mesas around Raton, New Mexico

My Cousin K moved to New Mexico when she was 10 years old. THAT was before I was born. She was a typical Cali Gurl before then. But she loved horses and loved loved loved visiting her GRANDPA'S ranch in northern New Mexico. She blended right in and grew up loving the ranching lifestyle and the people who live there. It is a very different and very beautiful state. There is a lot of variety in NM - mountains, desert, mesas and verdant farmlands on wide open plains. Where she lived it is mesas and mountains. There are ranches - predominantly cattle - everywhere. And critters abound - antelope, deer, skunk, cows, horses, coyotes, and so on.

This is a barn that looks normal from the front but from the back
you can see a whole wall is almost gone

Cousin K met NOW Cousin HC when she was in school. They were friends from the start. They even went to PROM together although they were not boyfriend and girlfriend. As luck would have it, that prom date was a premonition - many years and many OTHER boy/girl friends later, they found each other and fell in love. That is a pretty cool story, huh? They had their wedding ON TOP OF A MESA in a church that Cousin K's great-great grandfather helped build. It is a very old building. It is a small little church - The Johnson Family Church on Johnson Mesa.

Johnson Family Church

Inside the church it is small and cozy which was good because out on the mesa it was cool and very very windy. What a beautiful day for a wedding, though. You wouldn't have known that it was stormy just two days before. The wedding was performed by a family friend - someone Cousin K and NOW Cousin HC grew up with. I think that is so cool. It was very unconventional in some ways and very traditional in others. Perfect for Cousins C and HC.

Her colors were teal and purple which is unconventional
but really made church interior dazzle

The reception was held at a hunting lodge owned by family friends. At first I was all - WHA"? A HUNTING lodge??? But in reality it was very nice and comfortable. The outside was filled with hay bales which people sat on and used as tables. Water and soda was in wheelbarrows filled with ice. Dancing was also done out there in the shade of the trees. It was a very fun time.

An English Holiday As Related By Noodles

Princess Leah gave me this set to chronicle my adventures
Thank you Leah for such a thoughtful gift

As you are all aware of, my Mommy #2 went on an adventure without me. She couldn't take me because of quarantine laws in the United Kingdom. I really really really wanted to go, though, so when she was showing me her photos I came up with a plan. Are you ready?

The Tales of Noodles the Pug in Jolly Old England
By
Noodles the Pug

9:40 am
Dear Diary,
Today we are going into London to meet with Princess Leah, her Mum and her Dad. I am so excited. I hope they are as wonderful as they seem to be in all of the letters we have exchanged.

We are on the train to the Waterloo Station and then we will walk over to the Thames. This is the Southbank area of London - home of the Tower Bridge, Tower of London, and the Millennium Eye. And this is where I will meet Princess Leah and her 'rents for the first time.

11:05 am

Dear Diary,
I have met her!!!! I finally met Princess Leah. She is as funny and smart as I always thought she was. Plus she is so beautiful. What fun we have had so far! We met at the Golden Hinde - an old old ship that is not at all gold. According to the placard in front of it, it is the ship Sir Francis Drake sailed on to the Colonies (the United States as we now call it - some people in England still call it the Colonies).

We are taking a walk down the South Bank to see all of the fabulous shops and sights.

Around every corner there is a surprise. We found this street musician playing with FIRE! It was a hoot, to coin a pun. Every time he blew his horn, fire would emerge. Isn't that the coolest?

We walked a little more and lo and behold there was the Globe Theatre of SHAKESPEARE fame. It isn't the ACTUAL Globe Theatre as that was gone years ago. But it is still THE place to go watch some Shakespeare which I loves loves loves. Although, I have to admit I am a bit bothered by the lack of dogs in his plays.

Look closely and you'll see our pawrents

Our last adventure with Leah and her pawrents was to the Millennium Eye - a HUGE ferris wheel along the Thames. It was built to honor the change from 1900 to 2000. There is also a bridge you can walk over to downtown London. It's pretty cool, too.

This is a stock photo from Wikipedia. We were not at a
good vantage point for this shot

We waited for a short while, by Disneyland standards, that is. Finally we were on the Eye and treated to some really spectacular vistas of London. Leah and I commemorated the experience by taking a SELFIE. It's pretty fun to fly so high.

That's where the Queen of England lives

Our day in London was almost done and we had to get back to Waterloo Station to catch a train. But before we said our farewells, we stopped by a riverside tavern and had some COOL ONES. The weather, although overcast, was quite nice and mild. We did catch a bit of rain before the train took off, though.

This was such a fun day and I really really really did not want to say GOODBYE to Princess Leah. I hope we can meet again soon Leah - you are one super duper pup.

Away to the unhealthy FOOD go you,
Where puppies eat like their humans do;
But I’ll be true to the kibble I bring,
And live and EAT like a Pirate King.

For I EAT like a Pirate King!
And it is, it is a glorious thing
To EAT like a Pirate King!

For I EAT like a Pirate King!
Chorus.
You do!
Hurrah for our Pirate FOOD!
King.
And it is, it is a glorious thing
To EAT like a Pirate King.
Chorus.

Another Chewy Delivery

We got another box from Chewy, which included dog treats and freeze-dried cat food. Mommy 1 immediately gave Molly and I a treat, and we loved it! It actually took me a bit of time to eat it, which is nice because I usually just swallow them whole.
Sunshine hasn't had the chance to try out her food yet, wanting to wait until Mommy 2 comes home. So expect a cat review sometime next week. Something in my gut is telling me it's going to be a real crowdpleaser. Or it could be my stomach growling. I'm hungry.

Waiting

Tomorrow night is when Mommy 2 is coming home from Switzerland. I'm so excited to see her again. Mommy 1 told me she met a few pugs up there, but they weren't nearly as cute as me (I think she was just sparing my feelings though, because they were pretty cute). I'll be waiting in my bed.... asleep for Mommy 2.
In addition, I know that I said that I missed summer days yesterday, but the weather is sunny and clear today. California weather, I'm telling 'ya. All I know is that . . .

Winter is coming.

Long Summer Days

I miss the summer mornings when I would be greeted by sunlight beaming through the windows when I wake up. Mommy 1 especially misses this, because it's harder to get up in the morning when it's still dark outside. Don't get me wrong. I love the winter because that means the holidays, but I'll miss the long summer days. Oh well, that means more cuddles, right?!

Under the Table Begging

Ever since Mommy 2 left, I've been getting more and more treats from the Aunites. Now, some would say I'm cheating my diet, but it's not really when all she gives me are fruits and vegetables. Every now and then, I'd get a big, fat juicy treat. Mommy 1 is not amused. But hey, it could be worse, right?

Update: Mommy 2 Went On Vacation.

So turns out Mommy 2 is in London and will be gone until next Thursday. She is visiting an old friend and will be staying with her, leaving Mommy 1 and I. That's okay, because she deserves a vacation. Besides Disney, she hasn't traveled in a LONG time. So we understand.
We can only wish her safe travels and wait for her to get home. Until then, I'm going to take a nap.

Mommy 1 Everyday, While Mommy 2 is Away.

Sorry that this blog post is late. I've been waiting for Mommy 2 to get home all day, but I think she's not coming home for a while. I have this sixth sense where I can tell when the humans are going away. I've been getting real good practice lately when they always go to Disneyland. But this time, I have Mommy 1 with me to keep me company.
She's trying to get used to my schedule with feeding at 6 am, and she's doing pretty well. But I have to be here for her as well. We haven't gone this long without Mommy 2 in a long time, so it's a bit hectic. It doesn't help that Mommy 1 also has a cold AND has allergies because of my three coats of fur.
But I can tell that she loves me, because she puts up with it anyways. I miss Mommy 2 a lot, but I'm so glad to have Mommy 1 with me. Because we are here to comfort each other until Mommy 2 gets back. Until then, I'll be doing my usual routine- eat, sleep, beg.

She's Trippin' and I'm Flippin'

Mommy's Leaving Me, it's "Plane" to See
Noodles*

All her bags are packed
I'm not ready for her to go
I'm standin' here right by the door
There's just no way I'm gonna say goodbye
But the door is openin'
It's time to load
Auntie C is waitin'
Please don't blow that horn
I admit it - I'm so lonesome
I'll just cry

So kiss me Mom, and snuggle wi' me
Whisper that you'll think of me
Tell me that I won't be all alone
'Cause You're leavin' on that plane
Don't know when you'll be back again
Days mean nothing to a dog

Everyone's Home But Still No Lap To Snuggle In

Happy Friday!
Today everybody is home. It is just one of those weird things that happen once in a while. It's kinda cool because there was no morning drama and no rushed exits. Everyone (except me. I made my Mommy get up at 5am) slept in until 8am and even then they were slow to emerge from their rooms.

I like the pace of days off. They are more relaxed and casual.

This weekend will be filled with wedding prep (favors and picking up dresses) because Mommy leaves for her trip on Wednesday and doesn't return until just before the wedding. Then on Monday - Labor Day - we are having some friends from Sacramento over for a BBQ. That'll be fun, don't you think? I actually LOVE LOVE LOVE it when Aunty T BBQs because she "accidentally" drops bits of chicken, pork, etc. What ever she is cooking. And then there are the "tester" bites. Oh I tell you. . . there's no need for dinner when Aunty T BBQs.

I'll try my best to get some blogs posted while Mommy is away. No Promises, though. Just. . . I'll try.

Have a great weekend - long weekend if you can -

September Already? I Have a New Challenge and It's All About FOOD

No. These ARE my real ears. Why?

I cannot believe it is already September. That means in a few short days Mommy #2 is flying OVER THE POND to meet Princess Leah and her 'rents. Without me, I might add. She'll be gone about 8 days. Then she is home a day and the next day my Mommy #1 moves away from home to her new dorm at her new UNIVERSITY! That is a huge change for us, to be sure. Luckily she will be only 7.5 miles away . . . but she won't be available for cuddles and naps and THAT is gonna be hard on me. THEN a few days after that, the WHOLE family sans pets leave for my Cousin K's wedding in New Mexico! They will be gone for 4 days. I am gonna miss them.

But to keep me from being too sad, Chewy.com offered me the chance to be a part of their 30 Day Challenge for NUTRA WILD FRONTIER kibble. It sounded so yummy that as soon as Mommy asked I started jumping up and down excitedly. YES! YES! YES! I said. But I had to wait TWO whole days for the food to arrive.

Not moving until this box is opened

Of course, it was still AUGUST so Mommy would not open the bag yet. She wouldn't no matter how much I begged and begged. Then Molly chimed in and we harmonized our begging - she sang the soprano part and I am more of an alto. It was like a choir. A choir of "Feed me! Feed me! Feed me!"

But Mommy did not.

Here's some facts about NUTRA WILD FRONTIER Rolling Meadows. It is one of FOUR delicious-sounding recipes for the Wild Frontier product line. There are: Woodland Trail (venison), Cold Water (salmon), Open Valley (chicken), and Rolling Meadow (lamb). We are normally all about the chicken but this time we chose lamb. In the past, lamb has been pleasing to both of us.

Wild Frontier food is characterized by being high protein and grain-free. This is important because recent studies have shown that dogs perform better on a high protein diet. AND grain-free is important not only for digestion but also to prevent food based allergies. Chewy.com, on it's website, says Wild Frontier's key benefits are
Key Benefits
  • High protein, grain- free formula helps keep your dog full and happy
  • Provides steady energy for an active lifestyle
  • Helps support a strong, lean body
  • Great for adult dogs
Mommy keyed right in on the lean body part of these benefits. You know as well as I do that PUGS are always fighting the battle of the pudge. Mommy is finding that high quality foods that are grain-free and high protein really mean my weight is in check without drastically cutting down on my portions. That works for me. And being fuller means at LEAST 10 minutes of silence before I begin begging again.

So we are excited to try this food and see how it works for us. Today is September 1 so that means tonight dinner is in the ROLLING MEADOW.

I'll NUZZLE with you anytime Chewy.com

*We have received a month's worth of food so we can evaluate the food and take note of how we do on it. We are not being paid for any of this and any opinions expressed on this blog are ours and ours alone.
