Two Dogs, One Bed

I don't know what I was thinking. I do NOT feel this overwhelming desire to bunk with Molly. It was not cold and I certainly was NOT alone. So WHY, you might ask, are we both in the same bed?

You see, the bed in the FOREGROUND is Molly's. It is smaller of the two and more enclosed. It suits her style of sleeping - rolled in a tight ball.

The other bed, the bigger more open one, is my bed. It suits MY STYLE of sleeping. . . allowing room for a blanket or a toy. Whatever strikes my fancy . . . it is MINE.

But Molly, you see, has no boundaries. She wants BOTH beds to be hers and the one she wants MOST is ALWAYS the one I am sleeping in. She will then saunter over the the OCCUPIED BY ME bed and muscle her way in. This is her M.O. and it happens everyday except when Sunshine the Cat decides to grab a bed for herself. Then Molly and I share a bed out of FEAR.

One day Mommy #2 walked into the room to find ALL THREE OF US sleeping in the SMALLER bed! I must have been REAL tired to not have noticed that.

It does bother me a LITTLE. I like my bed and I like to sleep alone in my bed. BUT I don't stress about it too much. . . because, you see, my REAL BED is neither of these. No, no, no. My real bed is MY MOMMY'S BED. She may not know it, but it is true. And that is ONE BED from which Molly cannot muscle me.

It's ALL Greek to Me

My assistant is sooooo tired today that she has already told me to make it a QUICK blog today. I had other plans but decided to do a quick chat about some really unique treats I got at the Pet Expo earlier this month. I tried A LOT of different treats and they were all good. But these treats stood out from ALL the OTHERS.

The treats are called Elektra's Dog Treats and they are made by a family-owned bakery in San Rafael (in Marin, north of my hometown), California. The PEOPLE side of the bakery, Glyká-Sweets, is known for their Greek cookies; so making doggie cookies seemed a natural progression from there.

What makes these dog cookies different from the rest? Why the Greek inspired flavors:

  • Spinach and Feta
  • Pumpkin Pie
  • Banana Biscotti
I tried them all - they are just as yummy as they sound and they all have a good CRUNCH. Even picky Molly liked them a lot.

So check them out sometime when you just want something a little different.

Throw Back Thursday - Asian Style

This is me on my SECOND Halloween. I am a bowl of NOODLES - Get it.

In China, where PUGS originate (and my Mommy #1 one did too), NOODLES are a symbol for a long life. This is why NOODLES are served on important occasions.

NOODLES are also considered a COMFORT FOOD - and for my Mommy #1 this is so true. She loves loves loves her noodles (and her NOODLES).

So Xīnnián kuàilè - New Year HAPPINESS, Xīnnián hǎo - New Year GOODNESS. . . and make sure to have your

This Year Puts The CON With FUSION

Okay. I KNOW I am a day late with this witticism but yesterday was kinda like a Monday so my brain did not kick in until today. This year we are celebrating an unusual combination of celebrations - Mardi Gras and Chinese New Year are in the same WEEK! They are only DAYS apart!

Pugsonally, I like to CELEBRATE no matter what the occasion so I decided this year to fuse the two holidays and REALLY PARTY it up.

VegHead

No. I am not a VEGETARIAN. But I do enjoy my vegetables WITH my non-vegetarian kibble.
Mommy says it is also a good way to fill me up since I get such a small amount of kibble each meal.
I like pretty much everything although I am not really keen on fresh uncooked spinach. I like SPINACH in things like treats, souffles, and so on.

According to Petmd these are the best vegetables for dogs:

Apples - without seeds or core (apple seeds contain chemical compounds that are poisonous to animals)
Blueberries
Strawberries
Watermelon - without seeds
Frozen bananas
Green beans
Carrots - raw or cooked
Sweet potato – cooked, cubed or mashed without butter or seasoning; regular potatoes are also good, but in limited amounts since they are high in sugar and can increase weight
Squash, zucchini
Lettuce
Spinach
Popcorn - unsalted and unbuttered
Catnip or cat grass

What kind of veggies do you like?

Basking* in the SUN

*BASK
verb
gerund or present participle: basking
lie exposed to warmth and light, typically from the sun, for relaxation and pleasure.

"sprawled figures basking in the afternoon sun"
synonyms: laze, lie, lounge, relax, sprawl, loll, wallow;
sunbathe, sun oneself;
informalchillax

Attention everypuggy!

The rain has left the BAY AREA and we are on track for some major sunshine. Yes, we need the rain more than sun. But what we GOT is SUN.

I am a firm believer in taking advantage of what the day sends my way (and of full food bowls left unattended).

So what am I gonna do about it? I am going to walk right over to that flower pot . . . no that little area near the barbecue . . . no THAT area of sunshine by the door!

And I am gonna soak up those warm rays until I get called into dinner.

THEN I will start hoping for some more rain.

Should Pets Be Considered Family?

Ignore the floor damage. I DID NOT have anything to do with
it. Focus on the abundance of food........

I was reading about South Korea the other day (no, not the place with Kim Jong Un) and the growing numbers of people there who consider their pets as part of the family. This is quite a change for a country that sells dog meat at the deli. BUT GET THIS - even the sale of dog meat is falling now that more people consider their pets as part of their family.

I want to make it clear here that I am not talking about pets as surrogate children. That is another debate. I guess what I mostly want to discuss is the PROS and CONS of pets being part of the family. I can think of a lot of PROS - the foremost being

  1. Pets who are considered part of the family are NOT considered expendable. Many pets end up in local shelters when the owners change homes, family situation, or preference. A beloved part of the family is not likely to be so casually dumped.
  2. Pets who are considered part of the family eat better quality food and get better medical care.
  3. Pets who are considered part of the family are also exercised more and given a lot more attention from the family.
  4. Pets who are considered part of the family have more toys, clothes, accessories, and so on making for a whole new industry begging to fill their needs. Economics 101 in action! Find a need and fill it!
  5. Pets who are considered family are better trained and socialized. This makes for happier living all around.

Those are some pretty good reasons for treating your pet as part of your family, huh?

And I am not saying it is necessary to dress up your pet (although I do like an occasional dress-up) nor treat it like a baby. Pets are animals and should be respected as such. Animals have a certain way of behaving which is quite natural for them and quite NOT human. That is okay. What is most important is that you and your pet learn to live harmoniously.

I honestly cannot think of a negative for making and considering a pet as a treasured family member. I CAN, however, think of LOTS of negatives for considering a pet as an animal first. Can you?

If you are reading this blog, chances are you are already treating your pets as part of your family. If you just happened by and read this blog because it looked interesting? Well welcome and I hope you found something to think about and maybe put into action in your own life.

The solutions to pet overpopulation and abandonment are not found in kill shelters. But maybe, just maybe, they can be solved with a little rethinking of the whole pet/owner dynamic.

Pup - Pug - Cap A-CCINO

A lot a lot of you talk about getting puppicino, or a pugachino, or some such coffee concoction. I had never heard of them until your comments! Honestly, I think the Mommys have been holding out on me. So I looked them up - there was not a lot of information out there on the Information Highway, but I managed to find out a few things.

How to make a PUPPICINO or a PUGACHINO

  1. Sit on your couch and call your puppy (or puggy) over to you
  2. Next grab a nice soft cuddly blanket and drape it over you so you are good and warm
  3. Lift up your puppy (or puggy) and drop her on your lap
  4. Cuddle your puppy (or puggy) to make the perfect PUPPICINO (or PUGACHINO)

Or if you REALLY want a beverage called Cappuccino

  1. First, steam the milk. Heat 1 cup of milk in a 2-quart saucepan over medium heat. ...
  2. Next, whip the milk with an electric mixer, increasing the speed as the milk begins to thicken. Continue mixing until you get the desired volume of froth.
  3. Now, make the coffee using your coffee or espresso maker
  4. Now, make the cappuccino! Pour the coffee into a warmed mug then add the frothy milk by pouring it into the middle and swirling

A Song Just Because

Sing
Sing a Song
Sing Out Loud
Sing Out Strong

Sing of Good Times and Bad
Sing of Happy Not Sad

I have always liked this song. It reminds me that sometimes when the sky is gray, a simple HAPPY song can make my day SUNNY.
When I close my eyes and sing a happy song. . . I can feel the warmth of the sun's rays across my fur. I can imagine a day when I was outside playing and the air was fresh and the sky bright and the breeze was tinged with warmth from the sun.
I sing with GUSTO and with the sheer love I feel all around me.
Yes, it is simply an illusion because the skies are still gray. . .
But I no longer care because the song makes me feel good.

Superbowl Sun

So while the whole family was inside yelling at the tv, I was outside enjoying the most marvelous of SUNDAYS.

Is this not the FACE of total CONTENTMENT?

I think so, too. My Superbowl SUN DAY was certainly better than any Superbowl SUNDAY.

This pose makes me look so FAT!
